  15.     VAX sucks.  Don't gasp and assume we're committing libel.  It's
  16.     true. Even its manufacturer will agree.

  18.     What we're talking about here is the VAX vacuum cleaner, a British
  19.     machine that Sears began marketing this year.  The introduction of
  20.     the vacuum with the same name as a rather well-known line of Digital
  21.     Equipment computers has created a malestrom of confusion among piles
  22.     of programmers who are less than bright and don't know a suction
  23.     hose from a dirtbag.

  25.     "I just don't think it's right," said I.M.A. Weenie, manager of
  26.     information services for the Institute for the Study of We're Not
  27.     Quite Sure What at Pork Barrel University in Pentagon, N.D.

  29.     "We spent three weeks trying to boot Ultrix 3.1 on the Sears VAX
  30.     without any luck at all.  Then, when we called the number for
  31.     software support in the doc kit and asked for a patch tape, they
  32.     asked, 'What color?' and told us Krazy Glue would probably work as
  33.     well."

  35.     Weenie did find one praiseworthy feature: "It runs Donkey Kong
  36.     better than an Amiga."

  38.     R.T.F. Immanuel, vice president of information services at the
  39.     investment firm of Crosby, Stills, Nash and (sometimes) Young, said
  40.     his company finds the Sears VAX far superior to the DEC product.

  42.     "The VAXstation we were using just never got dirt out of those
  43.     hard-to-reach corners and folds in the upholstery," he said.

  45.     How did this confusing situation come to pass?  According to DEC
  46.     spokeswoman Nikki Richardson, when DEC trademarked the VAX name
  47.     prior to introducing that line in 1977, it was with the full
  48.     knowledge that the British firm VAX Appliances had been using the
  49.     name for several years.

  51.     The two companies reached an agreement that allowed DEC to use the
  52.     name for computers and the British firm to continue using the name
  53.     for household appliances.

  55.     Because the VAX vacuum cleaner had not been distributed in the
  56.     United States, the two firms never clashed.  Until now.

  58.     But DEC takes a game view of the situation.  "We felt there was no
  59.     likelihood of confusion with the appliances," said Richardson,
  60.     reading from a statement prepared by company attorneys.

  62.     We asked Sears to supply specifications of the vacuum cleaner on the
  63.     grounds that our readers are highly concerned with such issues as
  64.     price/performance, processor speed, scalability, availability of
  65.     applications and whether or  not the machine has a flat-topped
  66.     display you can rest a beer on.

  68.     UT: What operating system does your VAX run?

  70.     Sears: Operating system?

  72.     UT: (quoting from the well-thumbed newsroom copy of 'Computers
  73.     Explained For People With Extremely Tiny Brains'): "An operating
  74.     system is the software that manages the computer hardware.  Its
  75.     development represented a giant step forward from the cumbersome
  76.     binary I/O of the early ..."

  78.     Sears: All you've got to do is plug the thing in and go.

  80.     UT: (remembering something some marketing guy said once): Why, that
  81.     would make your product... that would make it "plug and play."

  83.     Sears:  Yeah, you can just plug it in to any standard wall socket,
  84.     and after that, you just turn it on.

  86.     UT: (typing): "... compliant with all relevant standards... features
  87.     include high user-friendliness..."  What is the processor speed?

  89.     Sears: Funny you should ask that.  We have one at home, and we have
  90.     a really big living room, and the other day my son had a party for
  91.     his friends and the band he's in, Humongous Jet Flying Low Over Your
  92.     House, and the Missus got the whole room clean in a half-hour with
  93.     the VAX.  It even sucked up those little parts that accidentally
  94.     came off the dog.

  96.     UT: (typing): "high...processor...speed...and...power..."

  98.     Sears: And during the party, one of my son's friends dropped the VAX
  99.     out the window, but the darn thing worked the next day!

  101.     UT: "...robust..."

  103.     Sears: It's very light.  I'm not sure exactly how much it weighs,
  104.     because we couldn't really get it to stay balanced on the bathroom
  105.     scale.

  107.     UT: "...though the VAX has limited scalability..."

  109.     Sears: And it costs less than any one like it around!

  111.     UT: "...offers a favorable price/performance point to any comparable
  112.     machine of its class..."

  114.     Meanwhile, in a move DEC says is totally unrelated to the VAX vs.
  115.     VAX issue, the company announced last week that it is renaming its
  116.     product lines.

  118.     PDP computers still in circulation will henceforth be known as
  119.     "Kenmore Side-by-Side Refigerator/Freezers."  The DECstation line
  120.     will be renamed "Sanyo Color TV With Full Remote Control."
  121.  
  122.     And all VAX computers and VAXstations will be recalled, so the
  123.     following warning can be applied: "Do not use on delicate drapes and
  124.     fabrics."
